What to Look For

Distinctive boat-hull shape. The 18k inlaid nib is a standout feature. Contemporary classic.

One of Waterman’s most distinctive modern designs — a boat-hull-shaped pen with an 18k gold inlaid nib, introduced in 1997.1

Design

The Carene (French for “hull”) takes its name from its distinctive curved shape, inspired by the hull of a sailing yacht.1 The 18k gold nib is inlaid — set flush into the section rather than protruding — giving the pen a sleek, modern profile.

Significance

The Carene is widely considered one of the best-writing modern Waterman pens and a contemporary classic. Its unique shape, quality nib, and elegant lacquer finishes make it a popular choice for both collectors and daily writers.1
